LAP SPEEDS of a Navy HSS-2 helicopter are checked carefully by the official party, Dec.1, 1961, during closed circuit speed trials in which new records were claimed for 1,000 kilometers (175.3 mph); 500 kilometers (179.5 mph); and 100 kilometers (182.8 mph). Left to right are Robert A. Stang, senior civilian engineer of VTOL/STOL flight test, Naval Air Test Center, Patuxent River, Md; John L. Marshall, National Aeronautic Association who was directing official; J.P W. Vest, Sikorsky chief of engineering operations, and Ralph P. Vest, Sikorsky chief of engineering operations, and Ralph P. Alex, Sikorsky engineer and assistant timer. The trials were conducted along the Connecticut shore between Milford and Westbrook.
