Jacksonville, North Carolina -- Sikorsky-built CH-53D helicopters, normally stationed at the Marine Corps Air Station near here, flew high and far to carry help to Peruvians trying to recover from the worst earthquake in their history. An HMM-365 CH-53D (bottom) lands near a village in the Santa River valley; the towering black mountains of the Cordillera negra loom in the background. The Indians of another community (top) help unload relief supplies through the rear cargo door of a CH-53D. In 10 days, four CH-53Ds flew 166 hours through thick dust raised by continued tremors. "It was like an inferno," one of the pilots said.
