The William J. Kossler Award was awarded to the U.S. Coast Guard 17th District (Juneau, Alaska) in recognition for their part in what has been called the greatest sea res­cue in modern history. The U.S. Coast Guard 17th District was honored for its overall respon­sibility for the planning and execution of the Prinsendam rescue on October 4, 1980, Accepting the award was Captain Verne E. Cox, Chief of the Opera­tions Division, USCG 17th District.
