The William J. Kossler Award was awarded to the U.S. Coast Guard 17th District (Juneau, Alaska) in recognition for their part in what has been called the greatest sea rescue in modern history. The U.S. Coast Guard 17th District was honored for its overall responsibility for the planning and execution of the Prinsendam rescue on October 4, 1980, Accepting the award was Captain Verne E. Cox, Chief of the Operations Division, USCG 17th District.
