CW3 Charles Hemphill and CW4 Frederick Loehmer receive the Captain William J. Kossler, USCG Award from Joe Mallen (left) and Fred Smith. The Kassler Award is presented for the greatest practical application or opera­tion of the helicopter. Hemphill and Loehmer were recognized for their skill and bravery in rescuing an injured climber from Mt. Ranier. Under the most extreme weather conditions, they demonstrated individual and crew coor­dination and skill, in maneuvering their CH-47 helicopter to a hover above a glacier while their crew loaded the vic­tim into the aircraft.
